Dry needling is a valuable supportive treatment for chronic pain, stiffness and tightness in muscles. Dry needling is also very beneficial in aiding the healing response of an injury to all soft tissues including muscles, ligaments and tendons. With the dry needling technique, a fine, flexible and sterile needle is used. All dry needles are used once only and disposed of after use.
Dry needling is used to effectively de-activate myofascial trigger points. Trigger points are shortened bands of hyper-sensitive muscle tissue that react painfully when touched. Trigger points will cause abnormal functioning of the muscles and decreased movement and/or function. The insertion of dry needles into muscles assists in de-activating the nervous system that connects the muscle to the brain. I liken this to having a light (the sore muscle) switched on and it is unable to be switched off. The placement of a dry needle into the muscle will allow for it to release and let go, therefore switching off.
When an injury occurs, the bodies healing response can be to lay down scar tissue (collagen fibres). The scar tissue has poor blood flow and this can be accentuated in ligaments and tendons. Dry needling these injury sites can aid in the introduction of new blood flow to the injury and create a healing response in the tissues. This is very effective for post-surgery and injury rehabilitation.
When receiving dry needling people can sometimes experience a brief pain response similar to an electric shock or mild cramping sensation. This is usually momentary and passes as the target muscle de-activates and relaxes. Great care is taken to minimise any lasting pain experience and this rarely occurs beyond a few seconds.
Post-treatment a small amount of discomfort or muscle soreness may be felt at the treated site, lasting for a few hours to a few days. Generally, function is improved immediately and pain is reduced significantly post treatment.
