Why use oncology massage?

Oncology Massage

Why Use Oncology Massage As A Complementary Health Support?

For symptom management, research has shown Oncology Massage improves the quality of life for people with a history or diagnosis of cancer. It reduces the side effects experienced from conventional treatment of cancer and the symptoms of the disease process itself (Cassileth and Vickers, 2004).

  • Pain improved 47%
  • Fatigue improved 42%
  • Anxiety improved 59%
  • Nausea improved 51%
  • Depression improved 48%
  • Other (including shortness of breath, memory problems, dry mouth or disturbed sleep) improved 48%

Light touch massage, as taught by Oncology Massage Limited (OML) was the most effective form of massage therapy offered in this study.

A comparative study examining the benefits of massage versus meditation found both groups showed immediate positive effects on mental health parameters. Only the massage group showed significant improvements in qualitative measures of wellbeing and increased levels of dopamine, serotonin, natural killer cells and lymphocytes after 5 weeks of treatment (Hernandez-Reif et al, 2004).

Why I Chose To Become An Oncology Massage Therapist

In a roundabout way, Oncology Massage chose me. I have had family members and loved ones affected by cancer. I have been with them at different stages of their journeys and experienced their anguish and uncertainty in tough times. I have always viewed massage as a means to revive the spirit of a person at any stage of their life and to support a worn or tired body.

Undertaking training in Oncology Massage provided me with understanding and confidence to be supportive of others who cross my path and massage table. With every person I work with, I gain a greater admiration for people’s unique determination. I advocate Oncology Massage to people and carers to assist them to lighten their load and relax.

I have studied Oncology Massage with Oncology Massage Limited (OML). I have completed theoretical and practical studies to level 2 (OM2) at the Austin Hospital and the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre, Melbourne. I continue to learn more with every person I support.

The benefits and outcomes of Oncology Massage speak for themselves with clients experiencing reduced stress levels, improved sleep, reduction in nausea and improved immune response. It is for these reasons and many more that I have undertaken this direction as part of my massage profession.

Happiness is not a destination but the journey. Dealing with cancer is both the destination and journey, Medicine focuses on the quality of the destination. Oncology Massage focuses on the quality of the journey.
